Big Finn Hill Park is an example of what makes Puget Sound special

Big Fin Hill ParkWe are spoiled here in the Puget Sound area with the sheer number of wonderful parks and recreational opportunities in our open spaces, easily accessible.  One of the local natural gems of the city of Kirkland is Big Finn Hill Park. The park is nestled in between the Finn Hill – Juanita neighborhoods of Kirkland. The park is minutes away from beautiful Juanita Beach and the shores of Lake Washington, and connects with St Edwards State Park.  Big Finn Hill Park lives up to its name.   The park sharply branches off Juanita Drive and winds down to playing fields and a large parking lot. It sits on 220 acres of beautiful and natural wooded land and serves as a link to Denny Park (46 acres) and St. Edward State Park (316 acres).  The park has two entrances. On one side are the three baseball fields that are home to the Kirkland National Little League – complete with snack bar, batting cages and restrooms (access through Thoreau elementary).  On the other side (via Juanita drive) a soccer/lacrosse field, a practice baseball field, a great playground and a small off-leash unfenced dog area.  The park features the sports fields, but also boasts two large playgrounds – one targeted for older children and the other for toddler age.   There is also a nice covered picnic area with tables and grill station – perfect for a picnic or party. Kids will enjoy the play equipment as well as the large grassy area.  With the exception of the play area and grassy area near the Juanita Drive entrance, Big Finn Hill Park remains mainly undeveloped and natural.   Many local residents love the park for the wooded trails (20 miles).  Hikers will love exploring the local trails and seeing the variety of wildlife, which includes: deer, coyotes, owls, eagles, and other birds. The trails are mixed use so you will also see horses and mountain bikes on the trails.  For more information on this great local park click King County Park or Kirkland City Parks.  This area is reached from NE Juanita Drive, 4.7 miles from I-405.  If you are unfamiliar with the area then click MapQuest for directions.  The address is 13351 Juanita Dr. NE Kirkland, WA 98034.

  1. Agreed! Big Finn Hill is an underappreciated gem. One way to appreciate it more is to really get out in it. On June 15, 2015, there’s a navigation event in the park that combines hiking/jogging/running (whatever appeals to you) with the mental challenge of knowing where you’re going in the search for checkpoints on a map.

    See you in the park!
