Legacy: a dream that has become real, and in becoming real has touched others. The goal is not to live forever it is to create a change that will. Legacies are not something that can be weighed or measured with technology; they can only be judged by individual human hearts. Ray Bradbury in Fahrenheit 451 said, “The difference between the man who just cuts lawns and a real gardener is in the touching, he said. The lawn-cutter might just as well not have been there at all; the gardener will be there a lifetime.”

It is within the grasp of each person to have the potential to make a difference, to leave a legacy. The steps to touching the lives of others are quite simple, and quite huge:

  1. Start – The impact and difference you make on a daily basis will add up to the legacy you leave behind. The legacy you leave is determined by your daily choices.
  2. Find your voice and your personal vision; every day in small steps move towards your goal. This only happens when you’re comfortable being yourself and by making sure you’re not trying to be like anyone else.
  3. People who leave a legacy have found and maximized their strengths. A person’s life purpose and strengths are closely connected and are both important when it comes to leaving a lasting legacy.
  4. Add value; the people who leave a legacy have done things that have positively impacted and added value to others. William James said, “The greatest use of life is to spend it for something that will outlast it.”

A legacy is a lens through which we can look at our lives.
