‘Dirty Dozen’ list reveals fruits/vegetables with most pesticides

Apples again top the “dirty dozen” list of produce most contaminated with pesticides, while onions top the list of the “clean 15”.  This latest list was released June 13, 2011.  The rankings come from the Environmental Working Group (EWG) and are based on pesticide tests from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the FDA.

EWG’s list of the 12 fruits and vegetables that had the worst overall pesticide scores:

  1. Apples
  2. Celery
  3. Strawberries
  4. Peaches
  5. Spinach
  6. Nectarines (imported)
  7. Grapes (imported)
  8. Sweet bell peppers
  9. Potatoes
  10. Blueberries (domestic)
  11. Lettuce
  12. Kale/collard greens

EWG’s list of the 15 fruits and vegetables that had the best overall pesticide scores, with produce with the least pesticide contamination at the top of the list:

  1. Onions
  2. Sweet corn
  3. Pineapples
  4. Avocados
  5. Asparagus
  6. Sweet peas
  7. Mangoes
  8. Eggplant
  9. Cantaloupe (domestic)
  10. Kiwi
  11. Cabbage
  12. Watermelon
  13. Sweet potatoes
  14. Grapefruit
  15. Mushrooms

Thin skinned fruits are typically most susceptible to pesticide contamination. I use the listing to determine which fruits and vegetables to buy as organically grown.  You can get more information at WebMD.
