Every year is a great adventure or a missed opportunity. I like to start each year with the Lao Tzu quote – ‘The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.’

So What 3 Things Will Make Your 2016 Special

Every year now the exercise I start with is to write my three global goals on a piece of paper and I store that in an envelope on my night stand or on the mantel so I can see it every time I get out of bed or when I enter the room. The note includes the following favorite poem.:

My 2016 Goals

  • Ride Seattle To Portland (210 miles in 2 days…This is the slow group)
  • Hike Kindle Catwalk (I’m terrified of heights)
  • Hit a Weight of 185 pounds – 84 kilograms

So This Was the Start of 2016

Captains Log January 2nd…First 5 Mile Walk

I plan to walk at least 5 miles each day with two of those walks each week stretching out to 10 miles; that should help me meet my 12/31 weight goal. I am fortunate to live on the ridge above the Woodinville valley that is filled with over 100 winery’s, winery tasting rooms, craft brewers, and several award winning craft distilleries with tasting rooms. I’ve found that even if it’s cold and raining that if I’m off on an adventure the distance seems negligible. If you’d like to enjoy some of the best Bourbon in Washington State you will find the address and hours for the distillery below.

Tasting Room Hours
Daily, 11:00am—5:00pm
Tasting fee is $10 which applies toward any spirit purchased.
Tours of the distillery are at 1 PM and 3 PM Saturday and Sunday. This was actually very interesting and quite a bit of fun

  5. Wonderful poem, Charlie, and a very inspiring post. I usually set a list of 15 Things to do throughout the year (very often fun activities, sometimes with a bit of a stretch or challenge to keep me on my toes), but I’ve been lazy about doing it this year. Now that I’ve read this, I’m inspired to get to it.

    How are the goals coming?

    I wanted to get back to tap dancing again, and by golly, this month I finally did. I snagged a good-sized piece of plywood, plopped it down in the garage, and got out the tap shoes. It’s a workout!
